"Being able to host this event despite the recent devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston is admirable and demonstrates Weightlifting Fiji and other local sponsors' desire to look ahead to a progressive Fiji," said BSP Acting Country Manager Ravindra Singh.
Weightlifting Fiji in partnership with the Oceania Weightlifting Federation and the International Weightlifting Federation will host the elite athletes of the sport who will be competing for a place at Rio 2016.
"We salute all athletes for their preparations and we wish them all the best at these Games," added Mr Singh.
BSP is major supporter of sports in Fiji at all levels including minor sports. "Weightlifting Fiji is an example of how sponsorships are critical in allowing sporting federations to succeed. We have been associated with WF leading up to the Pacific Games. They were one of the most successful teams at the 2015 Port Moresby Games. We wish them well during the Oceania Championships where their success will mean a place at the Olympics," reiterated Mr Singh. "We are proud to sponsor Team Fiji to the Rio Olympic Games in August. This sponsorship aims to allow more Fijian athletes to qualify to compete in Rio."
Acknowledging this support, Mr. Atma Maharaj, President Weightlifting Fiji, commended BSP for sticking by the sport in their bid to host these games.
"This is definitely a plus for Fiji as the event has global recognition. Our athletes lost their training facilities in Levuka during TC Winston. But the athletes continued training showing their resilience. The have extra motivation to compete in this Oceania event, thanks to BSP and the other sponsors. Many of them are also aspiring to make the trip to Rio."
As Fiji's leading Bank, BSP has a proven track record in sporting empowerment. The Bank is a major partner of FASANOC Fiji and a Silver Sponsor for Team Fiji to Rio 2016.
